STUCK/POSSIBILITY

The Cost of Wonder.

Your brain wasn’t built to explore every possibility. It was built to keep you alive.

Once it finds an answer that works, it has little incentive to keep searching. Familiarity becomes a shortcut. Assumptions replace investigation. Certainty ends the search. It’s an extraordinarily efficient system—with one unfortunate consequence: some of the abilities that make us uniquely capable of discovering what’s next spend much of their time switched off.

The challenge isn’t developing abilities we don’t have. It’s deliberately activating the extraordinary ones we already do and giving the brain a reason to use them.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SCIENCE

What You Can’t Take With You

Most strategic plans are designed to get an organization somewhere new. They identify the destination, establish priorities, anticipate obstacles, and determine what must be done to arrive. What they rarely ask is what must be left behind. The traditions that once mattered. The best practices that once worked. The habits everyone stopped noticing. The expertise that became certainty. Before an organization can move toward a different future, it may first need a plan for extracting itself from its past.

THE IDEA

What Brought You Here?

Possibility begins with believing there’s more to find.

Organizations don’t always need to fix something. Sometimes they need to see beyond what they already know—new ideas, opportunities, solutions, and futures that familiarity makes easy to overlook. Start with what you’re hoping to discover.

You can’t pursue a possibility you never learned to see.

PUT IT TO WORK

POSSIBILITY

PROGRAM

Breaking free from familiar answers, assumptions, and ways of thinking is harder than it sounds. James brings this work into organizations through keynotes, workshops, leadership sessions, facilitated discussions, and retreats that help people overcome the cognitive forces that keep them looking in the same places—and strengthen their capacity to discover what others miss.

GAMEMAKERS

COMPANION SESSION

Great game designers solved a problem leaders still struggle with: how to make people want to do hard things. Gamemakers hands leaders that same design formula — so getting unstuck isn’t something you ask of people. It’s something you build into the work itself.

What rooms actually say afterward.

“This was provocative in the best possible way. James didn’t give us another list of things to know. He made us much more interested in discovering what we might be missing.”

Member, American Banking Association

“Finally! Someone willing to challenge the growing consensus that AI is the answer to everything. It was a relief to be reminded that our advantage may still depend on how well we think for ourselves.”

— Education Coordinator, Cleveland Clinic

“Gamemakers is the most innovative approach to leadership and management I’ve ever encountered. Using the principles of game design to rethink how we lead people is such an amazing idea.”

— Corporate Communications Executive, AT&T
