LEGAL SERVICES

A different perspective on the legal profession.

James has worked with more than 250 law firms around the world, from global firms and Am Law leaders to independent regional and specialty firms.

But James doesn’t study law firms. He studies how human beings connect— to people, organizations, cultures, ideas, and ways of doing things. Why some relationships become too valuable to leave. How environments shape behavior. Why success makes familiar ways of working increasingly difficult to abandon. And what allows us to see possibilities beyond what we already know.

Law firms don’t bring James in to tell lawyers how to practice law. They bring him in because nearly thirty years of research into human connection, combined with decades of work across industries and organizations around the world, gives him a perspective that doesn’t originate inside the profession.

He just happens to know the profession unusually well.

What James brings to law firms

The challenges facing law firms may be unique. The human behavior underneath them isn’t. James applies his research to four questions that affect nearly every firm: who people choose, how environments shape them, why successful organizations resist change, and what allows leaders to see possibilities they couldn’t see before.

PEOPLE

The relationships a firm can’t afford to lose.

Why clients choose a firm and remain loyal to it. Why talented people stay. What makes partners, colleagues, referral sources, and other important relationships increasingly valuable—and increasingly difficult to replace.

CULTURE

The environment teaching people how to behave.

Culture isn’t what a firm says it values. It is what its environment repeatedly teaches people to do. James explores the signals, expectations, consequences, and opportunities that shape behavior—and why trying to change people without changing those conditions rarely works.

CHANGE

What made a firm successful can eventually hold it in place.

Experience creates knowledge, patterns, assumptions, and proven ways of working. That’s enormously valuable—until the environment changes. James examines why successful firms become attached to what already works and why meaningful change often begins by identifying what they need to leave behind.

POSSIBILITY

Seeing what experience makes difficult to see.

Expertise helps lawyers recognize patterns quickly. It can also make unfamiliar possibilities easier to dismiss. James explores the capacities that allow leaders to challenge assumptions, notice what others overlook, and recognize possibilities beyond what the profession already knows.
